i’m a superhero

So, I agreed to take part in a promotion for BCIT’s annual staff Professional Development Day. It was all in good fun, and I think the results were great. Plus, I got to wear tights (yes, tights) and pretend I was Spider-Man.

(I’m the Manager of Web Services at BCIT, hence the Webslinger thing. See the rest of the site for more Superheroes).

Kudos to Leslie and her crew for a well-excuted campaign. Hope it draws them in!

yeah, this is my excuse

I’m the first to admit my sloth-like tendencies with regard to this site, but at the same time I think there’s a bit more going on here. As you’ll note in these pages about me, I have a lot of different interests related to my professional and personal lives, and sometimes it can be hard to keep up. So when I read this post by Andy Budd, I found myself nodding and saying “yeah, that’s my excuse too!” (see post title).

Again, while I was never as prolific as Mr. Budd, the points about information overload, a change in focus, and working with creative and thoughtful individuals really rang true. The same has happened for me, and as mentioned a few days ago, I’d like to reduce the noise and try and make better use of the tools at my disposal.

As I attempt to try again to make this blog interesting, I’m faced with a myriad of ways to actually create and publish content. I’m inspired by guys like Dave Shea who have great things to say and share and have an understanding of the challenge that one faces as a web content creator and consumer; not to mention the ability to make sense of the technology and bend it to their will.

While there’s hope that I can use these tools to help me make sense out of the deluge, I’m aware that I’m adding to the problem. Ultimately, I’d like to contribute more signal than noise. I think I have some work to do.

designing for print

Not to toot my own horn, but I think I’ve got a fairly decent eye for design (I’ve made a decent living with said eye for the past 13 years or so, so that’s gotta be good for something, right?). I get the golden mean, basic principles of alignment and proximity, I love typography, and I understand visual hierarchy. I love to put together layouts and interaction models. I even have fun putting together layouts for ads, brochures and other information pieces.

But gawddammit I hate print production stuff. As a web designer, low resolution and pixel measurements have been my stock in trade. I’ve been designing a CD cover and collateral for my mom’s husband though, and while I’m enjoying the conceptual design, I know the print house is gonna scoff at my PSD files.

*sigh*
